After being outplayed in ODIs and T20Is, the West Indies start their first Test of their three-match series against New Zealand in Christchurch. The Caribbean side is desperate to turn the tide, earn vital WTC points, and end a run of five consecutive Test losses.

For a long time, making a turnaround in our fortunes has remained a dream
Despite a proud legacy and some success in T20 cricket, the last three decades have been largely unkind to the Windies in the longer format.
New Zealand Ready to Kick Off WTC Campaign
For New Zealand, this series marks the start of their 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship journey. The BlackCaps are coming off a 2-0 tour win in Zimbabwe and a historic 423-run victory against England in Tim Southee’s farewell match.
It’s the purest form of the game, really, and it’s the first Test series for me at home, and I’m really excited. In December, the Test cricket arena is always the best time of the year.
At home, New Zealand’s experienced batting line-up and the steady presence of Matt Henry in the bowling attack make them formidable opponents.
Windies Struggle to Adapt
The West Indies enter unfamiliar New Zealand conditions, with the last victory here dating back to 1995 under Courtney Walsh. Bowling precision will be critical, with Kemar Roach recalled to add bite to a bowling attack missing Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph.
Any bowler will want to come in these conditions and bowl because it's not too hot. The ball is bouncing and seaming around, so the guys are very happy about that and ready to bowl.
Lessons from the Past
The two-day tour game offered some hope, but history provides little comfort. West Indies have beaten New Zealand just once in their last nine Tests. Their batting occasionally shows fight, but the bowling has struggled consistently.
