Persistent rain denied India a chance to seal another group-stage win as their ICC Women’s ODI World Cup clash against Bangladesh was abandoned in Navi Mumbai on Sunday. But worse than the lost point was the sight of opener Pratika Rawal hobbling off the field — a major concern ahead of India’s semifinal against Australia on October 30.

India were cruising at 57 for no loss in pursuit of a DLS target of 126 in 27 overs when another downpour forced the umpires to call off play.

Injury Scare For Star Opener

Rawal suffered a knee and ankle injury while trying to save a boundary during Bangladesh’s innings. She slipped on the wet outfield at long-on, twisting her right ankle as she tried to turn in one motion.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the incident, stating
Team India all-rounder Pratika Rawal sustained an injury to her knee and ankle while fielding in the first innings. The BCCI Medical Team is closely monitoring her progress.

‘She’s Being Monitored Closely’ — Harmanpreet

Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur voiced concern after the match, saying:
Pratika is being monitored by the medical team, and hopefully they’ll get back soon. It’s a very important game for us. We’ve played very good cricket in the league stage, and everyone has contributed — we’ll carry that forward.

Unsafe Outfield Questions Umpire Call

The DY Patil Stadium’s long-on area, partially exposed to rainwater during the covers’ placement, became treacherous underfoot. Despite multiple checks, umpires Lauren Agenbag and Sue Redfern allowed play to resume. Rawal’s slip has now reignited debate over whether the surface was fit for play.

A Vital Cog In India’s Top Order

Rawal, who scored her maiden World Cup century in the previous match against New Zealand, has been pivotal in India’s campaign. Her prolific partnership with Smriti Mandhana has yielded nearly 1,500 runs for the opening wicket this year. Rawal is also on the verge of becoming only the second Indian batter to score 1,000 ODI runs in a calendar year, after Mandhana.
If ruled out, India’s batting balance could be severely tested against the defending champions. Coach Amol Muzumdar and his staff will be hoping for good news from the medical team before the semifinal.

With the group phase concluded, in next up semis, England will take on South Africa on October 29 at Guwahati followed by India vs Australia in Navi Mumbai on October 30.
