Persistent rain once again had the final say at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, forcing the fourth washout of the 2025 ICC Women’s World Cup at the venue. The much-anticipated clash between Pakistan and New Zealand on Saturday was abandoned without a result, leaving both teams frustrated and the points shared.

South Africa Seal Semifinal Spot
The washout confirmed South Africa’s place in the semifinals, joining Australia as the first two teams to qualify for the last four. New Zealand, meanwhile, remain fifth in the standings with four points from five matches, keeping their semifinal hopes faint but alive.
“It’s Extremely Frustrating” – Sophie Devine
New Zealand skipper Sophie Devine expressed her disappointment with the weather interruptions that have marred the tournament.
We had a little bit of hope seeing the South Africa game the other day, when they were off for five hours and came back. We just needed the rain to hold off, but it didn’t happen today. It’s extremely frustrating, let’s be honest. You wait four years for a World Cup, and to have to suffer through the rain... it’s a real shame.
Devine also suggested scheduling changes for future editions.
I hope in future they think of playing earlier in the day. We’ve seen the rain comes in the evening, so starting at 10 or 11 would help.
Pakistan’s Hopes Washed Away
For Pakistan, the washout effectively ended their campaign. With just two points from two rain-hit games, they remain winless and rooted to the bottom of the table. Captain Fatima Sana rued the missed opportunity.
We got a good start in the Powerplay, but lost a few wickets,” she said. “We believed that if we could have made around 180, our bowlers could have restricted them. Our bowling unit has been performing really well — hopefully next time.
What’s Next
Pakistan will face South Africa in Colombo on October 21, while New Zealand travel to Navi Mumbai to take on hosts India on October 23 — both hoping for clear skies and a chance to finish on a high.
