The 27-year-old leg-spinner has been sidelined from international cricket since Pakistan’s home T20I series against Bangladesh in June, following shoulder surgery and an extended rehabilitation period. The upcoming BBL season will mark Shadab’s return to competitive cricket after five months out.

Shadab speaking to Telecom Asia Sport (www.telecomasia.net) during a virtual media interaction from Sydney.
“This is a great opportunity for me. The BBL is very important for me. I’ll be back in action after five months, and I want to make the most of it.

Fourth BBL Season, Fresh Motivation

The upcoming edition will be Shadab’s fourth stint in the BBL, having previously represented Sydney Sixers, Hobart Hurricanes and Brisbane Heat. He believes the presence of several high-profile Pakistani players this season adds further value to the league.

Shadab
It’s a great opportunity and I’m pleased that major Pakistani names are playing in the BBL this time. The league is getting recognition because of them as well.

Ashwin Opportunity Missed

While excited about the season, Shadab admitted disappointment at missing the chance to share the dressing room with Ravichandran Ashwin, who was set to play for Sydney Thunder before withdrawing due to fitness concerns.

It could have been great to play alongside Ashwin because he has been a great bowler.

Pakistan Presence Adds Extra Edge

Shadab was also delighted to see six other Pakistan players featuring in the BBL this season. Former captain Babar Azam will play for Sydney Sixers, Shaheen Shah Afridi for Brisbane Heat, Haris Rauf for Melbourne Stars, Mohammad Rizwan and Hassan Khan for Melbourne Renegades, and Hasan Ali for Adelaide Strikers.

Shadab
Pakistani cricketers have played in Australia before, but never in such numbers and never all at once. Back home, we’ve played against each other, but this is the first time we’ll be doing it abroad. Playing against friends has a different feeling.

He also expects strong crowd support. “Our fans are excited; they’re waiting for the BBL to start. We played the T20 World Cup here in 2022 and received great support. With big Pakistani names in action again, we’ll get a lot of backing.”

World Cup Competition Heats Up

Despite the optimism, Shadab faces stiff competition for a World Cup spot. Mohammad Nawaz, Abrar Ahmed, Usman Tariq and Sufyan Muqeem are all in contention for the spin all-rounder’s role in Pakistan’s T20 plans.

Shadab reflected
Injuries are part of the game. It’s very disappointing to miss cricket, but this is a great opportunity to come back stronger.

The 10th edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will be held from 7 February to 8 March in India and Sri Lanka, and Shadab knows a strong Big Bash showing could be his best route back into contention.
