Mark Chapman’s explosive 78 off just 28 balls set the tone for New Zealand’s innings as the hosts posted 207/5 after being put in to bat in the second T20I at Eden Park, Auckland.

Openers Tim Robinson (39) and Devon Conway gave a fluent start with a 55-run stand before Matthew Forde and Romario Shepherd struck in successive overs. But Chapman’s onslaught in the middle overs revived the Kiwis’ momentum, while Daryl Mitchell and skipper Mitchell Santner ensured a big finish.
Powell And Shepherd Almost Pull Off A Miracle
West Indies looked down and out at 93/6 in their chase, but Rovman Powell and Romario Shepherd launched a breathtaking counterattack. The pair smashed five sixes in six balls at one stage, reigniting the Caribbean hopes.
With 20 needed off 12 balls, the visitors were favourites — especially after Kyle Jamieson overstepped in the final over, leaving just seven to win off four. But the tall quick held his nerve, using slower balls smartly to defend the total and seal a heart-stopping three-run win.
Santner: “Nice To Finally Close One Out”
New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner praised his side’s composure under pressure.
Another close game, probably a little bit too close, but the boys held their nerve brilliantly. Jamieson closing it out after a tough start to his over was crucial. You’re never out of it against the West Indies boys.
He lauded Chapman’s intent, calling his knock a “game-changer”.
Hope Rues Missed Chances But Lauds Lower Order
West Indies captain Shai Hope admitted his team fell just short despite a spirited fightback.
That was too close. It’s unfortunate we didn’t cross the line this time. There are small areas where we can improve, especially up top. But Powell, Shepherd and Forde showed great fight to give us a real chance.
Hope emphasised that the power-packed lower order always gives the Windies belief, no matter the situation.
A Thriller To Remember
The final over had everything, a no-ball, a dropped chance, and two teams refusing to give up. With Powell gone on the fourth delivery and just two runs coming off the final two balls, New Zealand snatched victory from the jaws of defeat to level the five-match series 1-1.
Brief Scores: New Zealand 207/5 in 20 overs (Mark Chapman 78, Tim Robinson 39; Roston Chase 2-33, Matthew Forde 1-17) West Indies 204/8 in 20 overs (Rovman Powell 45, Romario Shepherd 34; Mitchell Santner 3-31, Ish Sodhi 3-39) Result: New Zealand won by 3 runs; Series level 1-1.
