When India got early wickets in the first session of the first Test in Chennai, it appeared that the long interval had come too soon. Yashaswi Jaiswal made a dogged half-century - his sixth on the trot - but thereafter, the rest of the batting line-up crumbled. Even Bangladesh, which had the chance at 144 for 6, couldn't capitalise for long as Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin steadied the innings with a stand of 199 runs. Ashwin also scored a century with 113 runs. A steady-pace attack led by Jasprit Bumrah ensured that Bangladesh folded for 149 runs in the first innings. Quick runs in the second innings helped lift India, with Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant completing centuries to make it an arduous task for Bangladesh to chase, which they could not do as Ashwin took six wickets to seal victory for India on the fourth day. Taking into consideration the pitch conditions, India would look to have three spinners in the next test at Kanpur. They are not too concerned with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in this Test match.

Rohit Sharma(c), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant(wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj

Bangladesh must have been thrilled to win the toss of the first Test and decide to bowl India first on the overcast conditions of Chennai. Hasan Mahmud did impress by taking 4 of the first 5 wickets, which included the scalp of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, of the initial session. Nahid Hasan got Jaiswal later as India struggled at 144 for 5. The early advantage Bangladesh had failed to capitalise on it as India reached 376.

The Bangladesh batters could not get much out of the Indian bowlers, especially Bumrah, for a mere 149 runs. Shakib al Hasan hit the highest score with 32 but went to an unnecessary shot. The trend continued in the rest of the Test-the batters ran after playing fancy shots where they could have preserved their wickets.

Although they started the chase of 515 confidently with Shanto scoring 82, the remaining top order crumbled against Ashwin. The bowling was apt; however the batsmen need to be even more patient and persevering at times. A fighting contest will do Test cricket good, especially when they are a weaker team in India.

Team India has been a powerhouse at home; they have won 35 and lost only 4 out of the last 45 Tests played at home. Although Bangladesh was pretty resilient in the first innings of the first Test, they eventually collapsed rather catastrophically. India might dominate at Kanpur with its black soil pitch since it suits the spin battalion comprising Ashwin, Jadeja, and possibly Axar. India will win the second Test pretty comfortably and take the series. Our prediction is that India will win against Bangladesh.
