After a series of defeats across different formats, the home team finally staged a comeback on Sunday to even the ODI series. In contrast to their strong performance in the first ODI, the top-order batsmen struggled this time, with England losing 5 wickets with just 55 runs on the board at one point.

Nevertheless, Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran joined forces to mount an impressive counterattack, forging a formidable 112-run partnership for the 7th wicket. Livingstone achieved a career-best score of 95, while Curran contributed significantly with 42 runs.

Although most of the English batsmen are currently in good form, they will need to display greater consistency in their performances. The pace trio comprising Reece Topley, Gus Atkinson, and David Willey excelled, consistently applying pressure to the New Zealand batsmen. Together, they secured 7 wickets, playing a crucial role in their team's victory. Additionally, Moeen Ali made a valuable contribution with 2 wickets, dismissing the dangerous duo of Daryl Mitchell and Mitchell Santner.

In the 2nd ODI, New Zealand won the toss and opted to field first, aiming to capitalize on the favourable overcast conditions. Trent Boult marked a sensational return to ODI cricket after a year by capturing 3 wickets for 37 runs.

However, the bowlers from the opposite end struggled to maintain the pressure. Players like Tim Southee and Rachin Ravindra proved to be quite expensive, providing the opposition with an opportunity to regain their composure.

Regarding the batting, Daryl Mitchell continued to display good form, securing his second consecutive 50+ score. Unfortunately, he received little support from his fellow batsmen. Finn Allen, Glenn Phillips, and Mitchell Santner were dismissed for single-digit scores, while Conway, Tom Latham, and Will Young failed to convert promising starts into substantial contributions.

Despite these setbacks, New Zealand has consistently demonstrated resilience on this tour, and we anticipate a strong comeback from them.

The Kennington Oval pitch is typically regarded as favourable for batting. It has historically yielded an average first-inning score of nearly 250. However, teams batting first will aim to achieve a minimum total of around 280 to provide their bowlers with a reasonable cushion. While there might be some early movement for the fast bowlers, once the batsmen settle in, they are expected to find it comfortable to execute their shots. At this point, both teams appear to be evenly matched, making it challenging to predict a clear winner. Nevertheless, we favour England to secure the victory due to their more robust batting lineup, which could be advantageous on this ground.
