After a hard-fought 2-1 defeat in the T20I series, South Africa are back in action against Australia, this time in a three-match ODI contest starting Tuesday (August 19) at the Cazaly Stadium in Cairns.

The series carries more weight than just a battle for bragging rights. For the Proteas, it marks the beginning of their long-term build-up to the 2027 World Cup – and at the centre of that journey is a fresh face: Dewald Brevis.
A Debut Generating Global Buzz
The 21-year-old batting prodigy, nicknamed "Baby AB" for his audacious strokeplay, is all set to make his ODI debut. Brevis lit up the recent T20I series with his fearless batting, and South Africa will be eager to see whether his attacking intent translates to the 50-over stage.
It’s always exciting when you see the young faces. The big talk has been on Brevis… excited to see what he can also bring within the one-day stuff.
Experience Meets Fresh Energy
South Africa’s squad for the series is a blend of youth and experience. Bavuma returns to the ODI fold fresh from leading his side to the World Test Championship title, while the comeback of spinner Keshav Maharaj adds balance to the attack.
Wiaan Mulder is another player to watch, set to bat at No. 3 and bolster the all-round options. His consistency could provide the platform for Brevis to unleash his attacking game against Australia’s bowlers.
Australia Bank on Young Guns Too
Australia, the reigning ODI world champions, will field a slightly experimental side. With Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc rested and a handful of injuries to key players, opportunities have opened up for youngsters like Cooper Connolly, Aaron Hardie and Matt Kuhnemann.
Getting ready to spend three-and-a-half hours in the field will be a little bit different for a few of the boys. But as a group, nothing really changes.
Marnus Labuschagne’s return adds depth to the batting order, while Cameron Green – who struck his highest ODI score of 89* at this very venue – is expected to play a major role.
Cairns Conditions to Challenge Batters
The Cazaly Stadium has a history of keeping ODI totals modest, with scores rarely crossing 270. Bowlers are expected to enjoy assistance, making partnerships vital. With three matches packed into five days, both teams will need to manage their fast-bowling resources carefully.
Brevis’ Debut: A New Chapter for Proteas
Beyond the immediate contest, Dewald Brevis’ ODI debut feels symbolic. His fearless batting embodies South Africa’s fresh direction in the limited-overs format. For Proteas fans, the hope is simple: that his first step in ODIs will spark a journey leading to glory on home soil in 2027.
