(Satellite Today via NewsEdge) The US Air Force has launched a modernized GPS Block 2R satellite built by Lockheed Martin from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

The satellite, designated GPS 2R-15(M), is the second in a series of eight modernized GPS Block 2R spacecraft that Lockheed Martin Navigation Systems is developing for the US Air Force's Global Positioning Systems Wing, Space and Missile Systems Center out of Los Angeles Air Force Base in California.

The modernized satellites feature an improved antenna panel that provides increased signal power to receivers on the ground, two new military signals that feature enhanced accuracy, encryption and anti-jamming capabilities, and a second civil signal that will provide users with an open access signal on a different frequency.
