Alcatel-Lucent announced that it is helping OJSC Rostelecom, the largest Russian telecommunications company, dramatically increase the speed and capacity of its optical backbone network, which moves vast amounts of data from Europe through Russia to the Middle East.

The two companies will establish a superfast “100G” connection covering 3,500 kilometers of Russian territory, as part of Rostelecom’s drive to increase capacity on its ‘North-South Transit’ route to support huge volumes of data traffic generated by interactions between communications service providers, businesses and people in these regions

To help achieve this, Alcatel-Lucent will provide Rostelecom with its 100G optical coherent technology, which takes advantage of unique Bell Labs innovations in silicon to support 100G of data per second on each of the 80 wavelengths of an optical fiber.

This tremendous boost in network capacity and performance will provide enough bandwidth to support the streaming of more than 15,000 high-definition TV channels simultaneously on each wavelength. As importantly, it will drive down the cost of delivering a “bit” of data dramatically.

At the heart of the solution Alcatel-Lucent is providing to Rostelecom is the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS), an family of products that supports multiple applications, including 100G, and that offers exceptional capacity and performance for the transport of very large amounts of data over long distances.
