Yet another study has put Android at the top of the US smartphone market - the second this week.

NPD Group said Android overtook the BlackBerry in the world's largest smartphone market in the second quarter, marking the first time any platform has displaced RIM from the top spot since 4Q07.

Android ended the quarter with a market share of around 33%, while RIM's share fell nine percentage points to 28%. Apple's iOS was third with 22%.

“While the Google-developed OS took market share from RIM, Apple’s iOS saw a small gain this quarter on the strength of the iPhone 4 launch,” NPD Group executive director of industry analysis Ross Rubin said.

Motorola's Droid was the top-selling Android smartphone in the US, while Taiwan's HTC manufactured the remaining four of the top five.

Rubin said it remained to be seen whether RIM's latest OS, which powers upcoming BlackBerry Torch, can turn the tables.
