The rumor mill is awash with speculation that Apple is quietly testing the iPhone 6 and iOS 7, and may launch the next iPhone iteration late this year.

The Next Web, citing app developer sources, this week reported that devices bearing the new identifier 'iPhone6,1' have been showing up in dev logs. The app requests appear to originate from an IP address within Apple's Cupertino HQ.

The news provoked a flurry of media coverage, and a few predictions. Multiple pundits now expect Apple to unveil the developer preview of iOS 7 at WWDC in June.

Word of the identifier has also left pundits second-guessing whether the next iteration of the iPhone will be the iPhone 5S, as expected, or will leapfrog to the iPhone 6.

TechRadar is meanwhile predicting that the next iPhone will launch in September, or possibly in June along with iOS 7.
