The Asia VoIP market is forecast to reach $10 billion in four years, growing $1 billion a year from 2004 to 2009. In-Stat says long-distance calls, initiated from either traditional PSTN terminals or full IP local loops but carried over IP backbones to the recipients' local networks, will generate the bulk of the market's revenue. Last year, this type of call accounted for 85.4% of the market's revenue in Asia. Despite the rosy outlook, the firm says regulatory barriers in many countries in the region as well as the dominance of incumbent players continue to slow the adoption of local VoIP services.
