A*STAR, IBM team for Singapore Smart Nation project

A*STAR’s Institute for Infocomm Research (I²R) has signed an agreement with IBM to create innovative solutions for Singapore’s Smart Nation initiative.

The organizations will collaborate in the areas of in the areas of big data and analytics, cyber security and urban mobility. Both have vowed to work on data protection and cyber security to ensure safe digital operations.

The first project that IBM and I²R will work on is building a data federation & analytics solution, leveraging A*STAR’s Data Analytics and Exchange Platform (A*DAX) and IBM’s suite of Big Data & Analytics solutions.

It will serve as a launch pad for the industry to productise the A*STAR ADAX platform for commercial expansion outside of Singapore.

“The research and development in the areas of big data and analytics, cyber security and urban mobility by both I2R and IBM will take us a step closer to realizing Singapore’s vision of becoming the world’s first Smart Nation that uses technology to improve the lives of its citizens,” said Dr. Lee Shiang Long, Executive Director of A*STAR’s Institute for Infocomm Research.

During the two-year partnership, IBM will provide I²R the use of their cloud innovative application development platform, Bluemix and its embedded mobile solutions.

Bluemix combines IBM’s enterprise solutions with tools from its partner ecosystem to offer DevOps & Mobile capabilities in the cloud, making it possible to deploy applications from months to minutes and giving the marketplace easier access to solutions via a platform-as-a-service (PaaS) model.

As part of the collaboration, I²R will train their own developers on how to build advanced applications on Bluemix for the hybrid cloud, a combination of public, private and on premise environments for applications and industries with strict requirements for governance legislations.
