Over three quarters of Australian mobile phone owners use their handsets for more than just making phone calls and sending SMS, according to a recent report.

Around a third of Australians use their phones to check emails, over half use their phones for entertainment purposes, and nearly one in five visit websites on their phones at least once per day, according to the latest survey from the Australian Interactive Media Industry Association (AIMIA).

Nearly half of the users who check emails via their phones do so at least once a day, and 62% do so at least once a month, AIMIA said.

Consumers are becoming more comfortable paying for mobile entertainment content, AIMIA claims, with 46% saying they had done so in the last 12 months, compared to 34% in the previous survey.

Games are the most popular category of paid apps, followed closely behind by ringtones and music downloads, AIMIA added.
