The Australian Government will this year introduce legislation aimed at modernizing spectrum management in the nation, including by moving towards a single spectrum licensing framework.

The government recently announced the results of two reviews into Australia's spectrum landscape, which include a series of recommendations that will be implemented by the telecoms ministry and regulator ACMA.

Key recommendations include developing pricing mechanisms aimed at ensuring optimal efficiency of spectrum markets and allowing spectrum to be put to its highest value use, and consolidating tax legislation to support the move to a single spectrum licensing framework.

Other recommendations cover creating a whole-of-government approach to managing government spectrum holdings and establishing an advisory committee made up of members of relevant government agencies to oversee this approach.

Announcing the findings, communications minister Mitch Fifield said the reports will help the government fulfill its goal of overseeing the most significant reforms to Australia's spectrum management in the past 25 years.

A package of reforms will be introduced to parliament this year following further consultation with industry, he said.
