Bangladesh's telecom regulator has reportedly ordered nationwide telecom transmission network (NTTN) operator Fiber@Home to block Skype and Twitter as part of a wider social media crackdown.
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission told the network operator to block the sites on Sunday night, the Dhaka Tribunereported.
Fiber@Home provides transmission services to operators, ISPs, cable TV providers, international gateway providers and government organizations.
The company has also been instructed to closely monitor the operations of the sites and take further action if the companies do anything to circumvent the block like changing port addresses.
It comes in the wake of an order last month to block Facebook, Whatsapp and Viber, citing national security grounds. Video chat app Imo has also temporarily been banned. Facebook was unblocked on December 10, days before the new blocks were implemented.
These blocks were themselves ordered after the Supreme Court rejected petitions by two opposition leaders appealing a death sentence over alleged crimes committed during the 1971 war of independence, a deeply divisive decision that has spawned protests among multiple factions.
