Bangladeshi regulators have drafted an amendment that would allow existing fixed-line ISPs to also secure a wireless broadband license.

Existing regulations prohibit ISP license holders from securing Wimax licenses. But amendments proposed by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) would remove this roadblock, New Agereported.

The draft amendments have now been sent to the telecom ministry for approval, according to a senior BTRC official quoted in the report.

Current restrictions apply to ISP license holders operating in the 2.3-GHz, 2.5-GHz, 3.5-GHz, 5.2-GHz and 5.4-GHz bands. Wireless broadband licensees are also prohibited from holding additional ISP licenses.

The BTRC had intended in 2008 to auction off four Wimax licenses, but only two companies had fulfilled all the criteria.
