BlackBerry has launched a new cloud-based IoT platform, initially aimed at the automotive and asset tracking industries.

The new platform uses technology from BlackBerry's embedded systems subsidiary QNX Software Systems, as well as BlackBerry's network infrastructure and device lifecycle management software.

It includes a messaging system, data collection and lifecycle management modules. The messaging system uses BlackBerry's security functionality, as well as integrated analytics for data visualisation.

QNX software is used in embedded systems for cars, industrial applications and and medical devices. BlackBerry Technology Solutions VP of strategy and marketing Matt Hoffman said QNX is a market leader in the embedded systems industry.

“By combining the BlackBerry global network and device lifecycle management proficiency with the embedded software experience of QNX, we have built a modular, cloud-based platform that gives customers the chance to build IoT applications in a secure, efficient and scalable way,” he said.

“Looking ahead, we will extend the platform with other BlackBerry technologies to give developers additional control over the flow of information to devices on the network’s edge.”
