BT benefiting from Russia's success

Economic uncertainty in most developed markets is fueling a rise in business in Russia, the EMEA and Latin American president of UK incumbent BT claims.

Luis Alvarez says multinational companies are still expanding in Russia, providing fresh opportunities for his firm’s expertise in high performance, secure networked IT services. The BT executive made the comment while announcing a new interconnection deal with Russian carrier Rostelecom.

“While the global economy is more unbalanced than ever, a growing number of multinational companies are expanding in Russia, including in the financial services sector. The success of that expansion relies heavily on the ability to adapt instantaneously to changing market conditions,” Alvarez says.

The telco’s deal with Rostelecom covers its intelligent network services, which it already supplies to 400 Russian customers. In return, BT gains access to the Russian telco’s 500,000 km national backbone infrastructure, and a potential 43 million new residential and business customers.

Pavel Zaytsev, vice-president and commercial director at Rostelecom, notes the deal will provide “customers of both operators with clear benefits as they expand into Russia, or from Russia onto the global stage.”
