The market for carrier Ethernet switch/router equipment is due for a fall in 2009, but it should be short-lived as it rebounds in the fourth quarter, Heavy Reading senior analyst Stan Hubbard told an Ethernet Expo: Europe 2009 audience in London.

Hubbard said although the first quarter was a disappointment to most, he expects "good long-term growth potential." Limits on capex through the middle of 2009 and increased competition between vendors could short circuit what has been double-digit growth in Ethernet service among the 400-500 global operators. He projects a $1.9 billion market for 2009, down from $2.1 billion a year ago.

The CESR market should continue to balloon through 2012 to some $2.6 billion, with significant growth occurring in the Asia/Pacific region.
