Malaysia's Celcom Axiata has revealed plans to share LTE spectrum and infrastructure with Altel Communications to maximize spectral efficiency.

Axiata and Altel will pool their respective 2x10 MHz slots of 2.6-GHz spectrum, The Star Onlinereported.

The companies ultimately plan to establish and operate a wireless business offering LTE services to subscribers.

The partnership is similar to the LTE network sharing deal between Axiata rivals Maxis and U Mobile.

Maxis in January became Malaysia's first mobile operator to launch LTE services. The company plans toinvest 500 million ringgit ($155.8 million) in its LTE network over the next few years.

Axiata for its part has pledged to invest around 400 million ringgit towards LTE services over the next 18 months.

The Malaysian government has been encouraging telecom operators to co-operate to improve the nation's broadband penetration.
