China Telecom and China Unicom are reportedly considering setting up a CDN joint venture to help address the nation's growing appetite for internet content.

The companies could soon invest in setting up a CDN venture under the umbrella of China Telecom's cloud computing division CT Cloud, Reutersreported citing a Chinese newspaper 21st Century Business Herald.

China Telecom's cloud business introduced a CDN product to its portfolio late last year, and the joint venture would likely extend these capabilities.

The operator also recently entered a content delivery partnership with Akamai Technologies, which could further help in any CDN ambitions.

Under the agreement, announced last month, CT Cloud will use Akamai's CDN technology to assist in its cloud delivery. The two companies will also collaborate in the areas of technology and network access.

China Unicom and China Telecom have been rumored to be considering establish a CDN joint venture for months, but have so far not announced any such plans.
