China Telecom and ZTE have announced they have set a new terabit optical transmission world record.

The companies said they successfully completed error-free real-time data transmission over a distance of 3,200km for a period of 24 hours.

The trial used G.652 fiber and ZTE's ZXONE 8700 platform. The transport system used advanced optical modulation and high-speed signal processing to achieve spectral efficiency of 4bit/Hz/s.

China Telecom separately revealed that its net profit for the first three quarters of the financial year grew 17.1% to 14.81 billion yuan ($2.43 billion).

Operating revenue increased 13.4% to 238.2 billion yuan, thanks to rapid mobile gains. Revenue from mobile device sales increased by 52.7% to 28.1 billion yuan, but even excluding terminal sales revenue was up 9.7% to 210 billion yuan.

The company added 27.4 million 3G subscribers over the period – significantly higher than its overall mobile net additions of 20.5 million.

In the fixed segment, data gains offset the decline in voice services over the nine months, with total wireline broadband subscribers increasing by nearly 8 million to 98 million.

With China Telecom's results, all three big Chinese operators have now announced their earnings. Last week, China Unicom reported a 53.6% gain in nine-month profit. By contrast, China Mobile's profit for the nine months declined 1.9%.
