China Unicom HK has announced a HK$3 billion ($387 million) project to build its first integrated telecommunications facility in Hong Kong.

The company has commenced construction of the China Unicom (Hong Kong) Global Center, a Tier IV-ready ICT facility at the Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate.

The center will have a wide range of strategic functions, including acting as an internet data center and a Hong Kong service platform.

The facility will also house a global network operations center with a subsea cable landing station, a global network solutions and support center, a cloud computing service platform and a product innovation and development center.

China Unicom said it plans to use the facility to deliver more advanced ICT services to global carriers, enterprise customers and public sector organizations.

The company also hopes to use the center to strengthen Hong Kong's status as an ICT hub for the greater China and APAC regions.

Construction of the center is expected to be completed by the first half of 2016. It will be built to provide 99.99% site availability.

China Unicom said it expects the facility to create around 200 job opportunities for local IT and telecom professionals.
