Taiwanese incumbent carrier Chunghwa Telecom and Intel signed an agreement for the development of technology related to the internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing and software-defined networking (SDN).

The MoU expands upon an agreement originally signed between both parties in 2010, which focused on cloud computing collaboration, an initiative that carried through to the firms’ work with the Open Data Center Alliance (ODCA).

The new partnership announced in August will see both companies extending their joint development initiatives to other areas, including the software-defined infrastructure aimed at optimizing energy efficiency at cloud data centers.

Chunghwa Telecom, which has been researching on IoT, cloud computing and SDN for the past several years, plans to integrate its Intelligent Energy Network with Intel Power Thermal Aware Solution to optimize the energy efficiency of the telco’s cloud data centers.

The Taiwanese telco will also share its SDN innovations with Intel and the companies will jointly develop proof-of-concepts and innovative applications for SDN and NFV based on Intel’s architecture.

On the IoT area, the collaboration will focus on technology for smart homes, intelligent security, energy management and fleet management applications.

Chunghwa Telecom and Intel said the partnership aims to drive technology innovation, facilitate new usage models and enable the Taiwanese ecosystem to capitalize on new growth opportunities in IoT, cloud and SDN.

The partnership is the latest SDN agreement Chunghwa Telecom signed this year. In June, Chunghwa Telecom Laboratories, the telco’s research unit, signed a three-year agreement with NTT Data Corporation to conduct joint research on carrier-grade SDN technologies and applications that will be applied on the broadband, internet and mobile networks.
