Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom has partnered with Microsoft to collaborate on cloud services and applications for end users.

The parties signed an MoU in Taiwan yesterday, covering the development and deployment of cloud services via the Windows Azure platform.

Chunghwa will establish a data center using new Microsoft technology named Microsoft Global Foundation Services. The center will be used to provide cloud services to customers.

As part of the agreement, Chunghwa has also become Microsoft's local telecom partner for its business productivity online suite (BPOS) of services. Both parties will also collaborate on non-cloud based value-added services to be integrated into Windows-powered netbooks, phones and media centers.

“This MOU with CHT represents a shared ambition to integrate cloud services with the three screens - PC, smartphone, and TV,” Microsoft greater China CEO Simon Leung said.

Group CEO Steve Ballmer added that the strategy “emphasizes the importance of integration between end-user devices and cloud services, as opposed to cloud services alone.”
