Cross-industry 5G Automotive Association formed

A group of telecoms vendors including Huawei, Nokia and Ericsson have teamed up with automotive industry players to form the global 5G Automotive Association.

The new association's founding member base also consists of Intel and Qualcomm, as well as Audi, BMW and Daimler.The new association will develop, trial and promote communications solutions for connected vehicles including connected automated driving and integration into smart city and intelligent transport systems.

Core activities will include defining use cases, technical requirements and implementation strategies for 5G technologies in connected vehicles, as well as supporting standardization and certification.

The 5G Automotive Association will also aim to address vehicle-to-everything technology requirements, including wireless connectivity, security, privacy, authentication and distributed cloud architectures.

"The creation of this Association demonstrates the clear need for a cross-sector-collaboration between mobile industry and car industry for joint innovation, and to establish a platform to align on timeline and priorities and solution roadmaps,” commented Dr Li Yingtao, president of Huawei's 2012 Labs.

“It will facilitate global regulation, certification and standardization efforts for autonomous driving and future car services based on 5G technologies."

Intel IoT group general manager Doug Davis added that the partnership “will ensure 5G can support the use cases that will deliver on breakthroughs in safety and services for automated driving, smart city and intelligent transportation solutions around the world."
