Dell tablet to launch within weeks

Last week, Dell revealed its seven-inch tablet offering, the Looking Glass, to a sub-lukewarm reception at the Oracle Conference in San Francisco.

The tablet, which was briefly shown off, appeared to be only a prototype and a release date wasn't mentioned. Now, according to the Wall Street Journal, Dell's president of greater China, Amit Midha, is saying that it will be available within a few weeks.

As a successor to Dell's unique and warmly received (by the critics at least) Streak, the seven-inch model is a very bland device, offering little to recommend it over similar tablets such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab and also the recently-revealed BlackBerry PlayBook.

Bearing a name that brings to mind images of Lewis Carroll's famous story, the device may lack the specs that could make it a portal to tablet wonderland. A leaked spec sheet suggests that it will feature an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, 1.3mp camera and a lowly 4GB of internal memory.

It also looks like it could be running Android 2.2, an improvement over the 1.6 build that the Streak is running. The image on the spec sheet is definitely the same as the tablet featured in the presentation, but it is hard to see where the camera is placed.

At least it will have some decent processing power, although the rumor of 4GB of RAM seems too good to be true.
