Diameter signaling could become the new front line in the signal storm, Tekelec claims, with traffic growth forecast to more than triple mobile data traffic growth through 2016.
The mobile broadband vendor expects the number of Diameter messages per second (MPS) over LTE networks to swell to 47 million by the end of the forecast period.
This compares to just 87,000 MPS in 2011, and represents a CAGR of 252% between that year and 2016.
In Asia-Pacific, Diameter signaling traffic is set to climb to 16.7 million MPS by 2016, by which point the region will be leading the world in Diameter traffic generation.
The region will also outpace the global average with a 263% increase in five-year CAGR.
Tekelec CTO Doug Suriano suggested that Diameter signaling traffic could be as much of a challenge as mobile broadband traffic for the world's operators.
“The rise [in traffic growth] is steeper, the plan to time for it is shorter and there are no offload solutions like there are for data traffic,” he said.
