DiGi Telecommunications said it has become the first mobile operator in Malaysia to offer Skype service in the country.

The company has teamed up with the Microsoft-owned OTT player to allow internet savvy customers to use Skype services over its mobile network.

Starting from April 1, DiGi will offer customers using its postpaid broadband and mobile internet service up to 100 minutes of free Skype out voice calls to fixed-lines and mobile phones, as well as the full range of Skype's free voice, video and messaging offerings at normal data rates.

Praveen Rajan, head of products for internet and services at DiGi, said this latest offer joins the growing ecosystem of digital services that DiGi is building with the help of key internet players.

Earlier this month, DiGi has partnered with Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and Opera Software to introduce new service plans that allow its customers to access to these OTT services via mobile platform.

"We also see a keen interest among our customers to make Skype calls from their smart devices; a trend that is already happening among Skype users around the world,” Rajan said in a statement.

“With that in mind, DiGi is making it easy for customers, especially those who are internet-savvy, to extend their usage of Skype to mobile platforms."
