Diversity + adversity: All roads lead to the cloud

Telecom Asia – in partnership with Ciena – conducted a survey in January and February 2012 to assess how Asia’s telecom players are sizing up the cloud and developing their cloud infrastructure/data center strategies and roadmaps, and the barriers they see in their way.

The survey results largely confirm that, of the multiple paths available to developing cloud infrastructure (in terms of strategy, spend, connectivity, pricing models, sales models, etc) telcos are essentially exploring as many as possible.

Other key findings from the report include:

  • Ethernet is the primary connectivity option for cloud infrastructure and data center operators, from Ethernet over E1 or DS3 to 10 Gigabit Ethernet.
  • When it comes to build vs buy, many service providers are doing both.
  • Capex and a lack of standardization top a long list of challenges that service providers face as they plot their cloud infrastructure strategies.
  • Service providers are trying different pricing models, but pay-by-usage is the most common.
  • Service providers are also deploying multiple go-to-market strategies, but many are clearly banking on their existing sales forces to sell the cloud.
  • The cloud services space is widely expected to be a very competitive one by respondents – particularly with OTT players like Google, Amazon and Apple already in the game.
