Japan's NTT Docomo has completed a 5G field trial at the Toyko Skytree Town commercial center in collaboration with Tobu Railway Company and Huawei Technologies.

Tobu Railway built Tokyo Skytree Town in 2012, including the 634 meter television broadcasting tower Tokyo Skytree.

The trial forms part of the 5G field trials aimed at researching technical considerations involving the use of 28-GHz and other 5G candidate frequency bands, which were initiated by Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.

It follows the three companies' successful demonstration of 5G long distance and high speed data transmission between Tokyo Skytree and a shopping facility at the Tobu Railway's nearby Asakusa Station.

This trial also involved the evaluation of 5G system performance during real-time voice and video transmission using Microsoft HoloLens over long distances.

Huawei has pledged to continue working with Docomo and the ministry on 5G field trials in advance of the planned deployments in time for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic games.
