Japan's NTT Docomo has revealed plans to trial an IoT-based greenhouse pest monitoring system using its self-developed AI technology.

The company's Docomo Ventures investment subsidiary has invested in Silicon Valley based ultra low-power wireless sensor networking and high-precision local positioning wireless technology developer Locix to support the trial.

Locix provides a HD camera, network switch and cloud API based on 920-MHz radio communications and ultra-low power wireless sensor networking technology which allows the cameras to be run and image data to be transferred via the switches for up to several years.

Docomo plans to combine this technology with image recognition functionality based on its AI technology to trial a solution aimed at allowing farmers and agriculture sector officials to carry out remote monitoring of greenhouse environments.

During the trial, which will commence this month and run until March, Docomo plans to take photos of pests captured by traps set up in greenhouses to help improve the image recognition accuracy of the system.

Going forward, the company said it also plans to explore deploying the Locix solution to other sectors beyond agriculture, such as warehousing, merchandising and security.
