Ericsson has unveiled a new series of next generation, energy-efficient radio base stations that it says can reduce power consumption by 20% to 65%.

The RBS 6000 series supports GSM/EDGE, W-CDMA/HSPA and LTE in a single package, and requires only 25% of the space used by previous generations while at the same time doubling capacity, Ericsson said.

The RBS 6000 series, touted as the industry's smallest of its kind, facilitates low-cost migration, since it re-uses equipment already deployed and can be installed on existing sites. Its compact size also makes it easy to deploy new sites, the company added.

The series, which is available in indoor, outdoor and main-remote packages, is scheduled for commercial launch later this year. Ericsson is showcasing the RBS 6000 series at the Mobile World Congress 2008 in Barcelona this week
