Mozilla has announced the launch of the first smartphone running the open-source Firefox OS in India, with a price tag of a mere 1,999 rupees ($33).

Indian handset and consumer electronics vendor Intex has introduced the Cloud FX, India's cheapest ever smartphone.

The Cloud FX has a 3.5-inch HVGA touchcreen, a 1GB processor and expandable memory up to 4GB.

It supports dual-SIM use, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and support for multiple languages including Hindi and Tamil.

Mozilla president Dr Li Gong said the launch marks both the Indian and Asian commercial debut of smartphones running Firefox OS.

“With support from Intex, Firefox OS smartphones in the ultra-low-cost category will redefine the entry-level smartphone and create strong momentum in Asia,” he said.

Mozilla has settled on targeting the low end of the smartphone segment as its strategy to differentiate Firefox OS from Android.

At Mobile World Congress in February, the company unveiled a prototype $25 Firefox OS smartphone. The company also revealed it had signed on an initial 18 mobile operator partners interested in carrying Firefox OS devices.
