Samsung gave the world the first glimpse of its new Windows-based smartphone, the Omnia, at CommunicAsia yesterday.

The handset, intended to challenge the iPhone and HTC's Touch Diamond, is an HSDPA device with GPS, Microsoft Office apps and a 5-megapixel camera. It comes in 8-GB and 16-GB versions.

Lee Young-hee, VP of marketing at Samsung's mobile communications division (pictured), said the 16-GB Omnia would be available in Singapore market right after CommunicAsia, at S$1,098, initially through SingTel, and the rest of Southeast Asia in the same week. It will launch in Europe in July.
