French port pioneers maritime data hub concept

The Port of Marseille-Fos, France's main trade seaport, has announced a new project based around the innovative concept of the maritime data hub.

The port plans to construct new subsea cable landing infrastructure that will provide a plug-and-play interface for subsea cables passing through the Marseilles area.

The project is aimed at transform the port into a global digital gateway and interconnection hub offering reliable landing infrastructure for subsea cables.

Marseilles authorities will support the project by setting up a one-stop-shop system for permittng processes to facilitate applications.

The first phase of construction of the dedicated cable landing infrastructure, which is targeted for completion by the third quarter, will be able to support up to six subsea cables.

Colocation data center services provider Interxion, which operates two of its French data centers within the port's area, has welcomed the initiative.

“We share a common goal with the Port of Marseille-Fos which is to foster Marseille’s attractiveness for international, national and local investors, help the whole territory to grow and reinforce the role of the city as a global-scale digital hub.” Interxion France managing director Fabrice Coquio said.
