The Philippines’ Globe Telecom has contracted Nokia’s Nuage Networks to help the operator provide a nationwide SD-WAN service for enterprise customers and SMEs.

Nuage Networks will provide its Virtualized Network Services (VNS) SD-WAN solution for the deployment.

Globe plans to use the Nuage Networks VNS to differentiate by adding automation, improved flexibility, application-aware routing and per-application security capabilities, as well as offering a managed, self-service VPN portal for customers.

Through the deployment, Globe aims to help its customers create a single, secure cloud environment across multiple sites and access technologies.

“We are excited to partner with Nuage Networks to bring the first fully operationalized SD-WAN service to the Philippines. The policy-driven automation will simplify our operations and enable us to cost-effectively expand our service footprint,” Globe CTO and chief strategy officer Gil B. Genio said.

“The Globe SD-WAN service will enable our business customers to fully leverage the power of the cloud to connect with their customers and grow their businesses right across the country."

Globe has meanwhile announced that it welcomes the prospect of new competition, in response to the moves by the government to facilitate the entry of a new third major player into the telecoms market.

A third telco will create a healthy competitive environment that will ultimately benefit all consumers, the operator’s general counsel and senior vice president Froilan Castelo said.

“As repeatedly stated before, Globe is not opposed to the entry of a third player, or for that matter, as many players that the market can accommodate. Globe has always geared itself for growth and competition,” he said.

“Competition has the potential of opening up new sources of revenue streams for telecommunications players while benefiting consumers with more innovative products and services at competitive rates.”

He added that Globe is in the process of fulfilling its plans to divest its tower assets by incorporating a separate tower holding company. This plan would allow the third market entrant to rapidly roll out its network and launch commercial operations.
