The Philippines' Globe Telecom reported a 9% increase in both profit and revenue for the first quarter, on the back of double-digit broadband and postpaid mobile growth.

Net profit for the quarter increased to 3.4 billion pesos ($77.6 million), while consolidated service revenue grew to 23.2 billion pesos.

Mobile revenue increased 8% to 18.5 billion pesos with postpaid mobile revenue up an even stronger 18% to 7 billion pesos.

Globe's total mobile subscriber base was around 40.7 million by the end of the quarter, of which nearly 2.1 million were postpaid customers.

Broadband revenues meanwhile grew 12% to 2.8 billion pesos, while broadband subscribers climbed 26% to around 2.2 million. This gain was mainly driven by a 30% increase in wireless broadband customers, although ADSL subscribers also increased by 11%.

Globe's traditional fixed voice operations experienced an atypical rebound during the quarter, with revenue increasing by 3% year-on-year.

Total subsidy and opex costs swelled 15% year-on-year to 14.4 billion pesos as Globe invested in attracting high-value subscribers and in expanding its data network.
