The Philippines' Globe Telecom has stepped up its collaboration with the nation's police authorities to crack down on the unauthorized sale of international long distance calls.

The police and Globe's security team recently conducted a raid in Cebu City, arresting a Korean restaurant owner for hacking into Globe's international gateway facilities (IGFs).

The restaurant owner has been charged with violating multiple Philippines laws by operating illegal international simple resale (ISR) facilities.

ISR refers to the unauthorized routing and completing of international long distance calls using lines, cables, antennae, and/or air wave frequency and connecting these calls directly to the local or domestic exchange facilities of the country where destined.

His local business partner is still at large, but is also expected to be charged with violation of the Philippines' e-commerce law and access device regulation act.

In a statement, Globe said ISR practices are rampant in the Philippines, and are robbing the industry of revenues that are supposed to be used to subsidize the deployment and operation of capital extensive local exchange networks.

The company has been working with local government authorities and police forces for over a decade to clamp down on ISR syndicates.
