Google more than doubled the market share of its Android devices in the key early-mover smartphone market of the US in the three months to end-December, according to ComScore.

In the fourth quarter, Google’s smartphone device share rose to 5.2%, up from 2.5% in the third quarter, said ComScore.

As a result, Palm slipped into last place, with its smartphone share slipping the most from 8.3% to 6.1%.

At this rate, Google stands to overtake Palm as the fourth-largest seller of smartphone devices in the US in the first quarter.

In Q4, RIM again emerged with the largest OS share, supplying 41.6% of the US market’s smartphones, but its share fell from 42.6% in Q3.

Apple increased its market share from 24.1% to 25.3%, while Microsoft’s share declined one point to 18%.
