Tencent, China's listed internet services provider, has deployed Hutchison Global Communications's (HGC) internet data center (IDC) services in Hong Kong to handle huge traffic volume generated from its instant messaging services.

Founded in 1998 and headquartered in Shenzhen, China, Tencent specializes in online messaging service , gaming and e-commerce. It is now one of the nation's largest and most-used internet service portals.

In January 2011, Tencent launched Wechat, an instant text and voice messaging app. According to figures from Tencent, the overseas population of Wechat users has surpassed 100 million, in turn generating huge data traffic flow.

Local and overseas internet companies commonly see Hong Kong as a base from which to establish worldwide network connections. By deploying HGC's IDC in Hong Kong, which is accredited with ISO 27001 information security management certification, Tencent said it can now establish worldwide network connections and address its high-volume data traffic.

In addition, Tencent will leverage HGC's FTTB network in Hong Kong as well as infrastructure overseas to ensure effective data transmission.

HGC has been rolling out optical infrastructure since 1995. The company operates an extensive FTTB network in Hong Kong.

Andrew Kwok, HGC president of international and carrier business, said Tencent and HGC have been partnering in the deployment of various telecoms services since 2005.
