Hong Kong has the second fastest broadband in APAC in terms of both average and peak speeds, Akamai's latest State of the Internet report shows.

The first quarter results show that Hong Kong had an average broadband speed of 16.7Mbps during the period, behind only South Korea at 23.6Mbps and well ahead of the global average connection speed of 5Mbps.

Hong Kong also registered average peak speeds of 92.6Mbps, compared to a global average peak speed of just 29.1Mbps. Singapore was the only country in APAC to beat Hong Kong in this regard, with the nation's average peak speed coming in at 98.5Mbps.

Akamai for the first time also measured the percentage of IP addresses connecting to Akamai CDNs at speeds of at least 25Mbps.

Here too Hong Kong was in second place, with 17% adoption, compared to 31% for South Korea. Globally, adoption of 25Mbps or faster services grew to 4.6%.

But in terms of mobile connection speed, Hong Kong is not quite as much of a front runner. The city had an average connection speed of around 6Mbps, placing it behind South Korea, Singapore, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

Akamai's report also shows that IPv6 adoption is picking up steam, but that European countries are continuing to drive this growth. No Asian nation made it into the top 10 list of countries with the largest proportion of connections using IPv6.
