PCCW subsidiary HKT has clinched a deal to design, build, and support Wi-Fi facilities under the Hong Kong SAR government’s public Wi-Fi program.

The operator will implement 2,300 Wi-Fi access points and the 802.11n wireless network technologies in designated premises in the next 18 months, the Office of the Government CIO (OGCIO) said, adding that HKT will also provide customer hotline services and end-user support.

As the internet is in transition to IPv6, the government will support both IPv4 and IPv6, enabling the public to access Wi-Fi services delivered through both standards, the OGCIO noted.

According to Government CIO Daniel Lai, the Wi-Fi program now covers 440 government premises including Tamar Park next to the new Government Headquarters and other Government offices, major parks and tourist spots, public libraries, as well as cultural and recreation centers.
