The OGCIO said Friday that GovCloud—the government’s private cloud platform—has gone live.

The government has earmarked HK$242 million ($31.2 million) for the implementation of additional services on the platform in the coming five years.

GovCloud is the SAR government's first major private cloud initiative, providing computing resources such as server, storage, and network resources, for bureaus and departments.

Housed in local data centers run by a contractor, GovCloud comprises facilities dedicated to government use, an OGCIO spokesperson said.

The spokesperson noted that the system was designed and implemented with reference to international best practices of cloud computing and in full compliance with stringent government security requirements.

“GovCloud initially supports the development of electronic record-keeping and collaborative working systems [for shared use by bureaus and departments],” the spokesperson noted. “The platform will support more e-government services in the future.”
