A bill in Washington would end the $100 to $200 fees that some US operators charge to end a cellphone contract. The bill would require that early termination fees be pro-rated. Another provision in the proposed legislation would require mobile phone companies to call 'taxes' only charges required by federal, state or local jurisdictions. According to a Reuters report, Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam pleaded for a 'light touch' in regulating the industry in a hearing to discuss a bill to end these practices. The issue is an emotional one as soldiers drop their service in preparation for being deployed to Iraq and have been charged the high termination fees.
