Huawei, Baidu build China's first T-SDN OTN

Huawei and Baidu announced they have jointly built China's first internet data center OTN that supports transport SDN (T-SDN).

Baidu will use the network to support its open cloud services as well as its core search business and services.

The network uses Huawei's T-SDN bandwidth on demand capabilities to provide transmission pipes that allow Baidu to handle burst traffic between connected data centers.

Baidu currently mainly uses point-to-point interconnections between IDCs, which results in heavy load on the super IDC core switch, compromising traffic scheduling.

With the new T-SDN based network, Baidu will be able to transmit traffic from services at different levels of granularity at different optical network layers, reducing traffic load on core switches and allowing the company to adjust transmission pipes and transmission pipe bandwidth in real time.

“SDN is the product of applying IT technologies to networks,” Huawei president of fixed networks Zha Jun said.

“These networks evolve from pure data transmission to open, programmable, and service-oriented systems that can be driven by applications. They support dynamic networking, centralized control, and network-wide optimization.”
