A new certification program by the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers Communications Society aims to measure competency in wireless communications.

Called Wireless Communication Engineering Technologies (WCET), the first testing period will be held in late September in more than 500 testing sites located in 75 countries.

The exam will consists of 150 multiple-choice questions encompassing wireless areas such as RF engineering, access technologies and network

Through this certification, IEEE ComSoc aims to help address growing demand for qualified communications professionals "who can demonstrate practical problem-solving skills in real-world situations".

"This is a very practical program that will help wireless professionals advance in their field, develop new opportunities in a global marketplace and certify their expertise with real-world applications," said Celia Desmond, IEEE WCET program director.

By way of certification, companies will have a new measure for selecting individuals for wireless engineering positions and projects.

Desmond added: "The certification will also help individuals working in other engineering areas to switch to the wireless field as new and exciting job opportunities arise."
