Flying in the face of all that seems logical, researchers have determined that instant messaging at work can increase productivity.
Slashdot.org, a tech website, claims that Ohio State University and the University of California researchers surmised that the increased productivity comes from IM allowing users to 'flag their availability' to perform tasks.
Over 29% of those studied who use computers at work use IM in the workplace and usage is not dependent on occupation, education, gender or age. At the workplace it is 'socially acceptable' to ignore incoming messages when too busy at the moment.
